🐶 Dog Breeds and Common Health Traits: What I Learned Before Getting Willie

A simple look at common health traits by breed and what I learned while researching before getting Willie

🐾 A Simple Awareness Approach

Before I got Willie, I spent some time researching different breeds and what they tend to be prone to over time.

It wasn’t about trying to predict problems—I just wanted to be aware of a few common things so I wouldn’t be caught off guard later.

Now that I have Willie, it’s simply part of the routine—staying on top of a few basics and adjusting as needed.

I’m not a veterinarian—just sharing what I learned during that research and what I’ve seen as a dog owner.

🐾 Common Health Traits by Breed

Before getting into this, one thing I learned is that just because a breed is prone to something doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. It’s just something that shows up more often.

šŸ• Labradoodle / Poodle Mix (Like Willie)

  • Often mentioned: ear infections, joint awareness

With Willie, I keep it simple:

  • Stay on top of ear cleaning
  • Give him joint treats

Nothing complicated—just part of the routine.

šŸ• Labrador Retriever

  • Often mentioned: hip and joint issues, weight gain

What owners tend to do:

  • Keep them active
  • Watch portions

šŸ• Golden Retriever

  • Often mentioned: joint concerns, skin issues

What owners tend to do:

  • Regular grooming
  • Pay attention to coat and mobility

šŸ• Pit Bull

  • Often mentioned: skin sensitivities, allergies

What owners tend to do:

  • Pay attention to skin and coat
  • Try different foods if needed
  • Work with their vet when allergies persist

My daughter has a pit bull, and allergies have been something they’ve had to work through a bit. He’s currently trying a different brand of food to see if that helps, and she also takes him in for allergy shots. They seem to help for a while, but it’s something they stay on top of over time.

šŸ• French Bulldog

  • Often mentioned: breathing sensitivity, heat issues

What owners tend to do:

  • Avoid overheating
  • Keep activity moderate in warm weather

šŸ• German Shepherd

  • Often mentioned: hip and back issues

What owners tend to do:

  • Keep them active
  • Maintain a healthy weight

šŸ• Smaller Breeds (Chihuahua and Mixes)

  • Often mentioned: dental health, longer lifespan

What owners tend to do:

  • Stay on top of dental care
  • Regular checkups

I see quite a few Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes in my apartment complex, and they seem to do really well in that kind of environment.

šŸ• Mixed Breeds

Mixed-breed dogs can vary quite a bit depending on their background.

One thing that came up during my research is that mixed-breed dogs from shelters are sometimes talked about as having fewer inherited issues than certain purebred lines.

I don’t know how much that varies from dog to dog, but it’s something I saw mentioned and thought was worth being aware of.

Like most of this, it just comes down to the individual dog.

šŸ“Š A Simple Way to Look at It

(This isn’t scientific—just a simple way to think about it.)

ā³ A Quick Note on Life Expectancy

One other thing that came up while I was researching breeds was life expectancy.

In general, smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs. For example, Willie is expected to be somewhere in the 12–15 year range, which seems pretty typical for a dog his size.

It’s not something you can predict exactly, but it’s one more thing people tend to be aware of.

🐾 Don’t Overlook Adoption

One thing that also came up during my research was how many great dogs are available through shelters and rescues.

A lot of these dogs are mixes of the same breeds mentioned above, and many already have a sense of their temperament, which can be helpful when trying to find the right fit.

You might even find a dog that’s already a great fit without as much guesswork.

At the end of the day, there are a lot of good dogs out there looking for a home.

šŸ’” What I Took Away From All This

Looking back, I realized a few simple things:

  • You can’t avoid every issue
  • Being aware makes things easier
  • Most of it comes down to simple, consistent care
  • Every dog is different

For me, it’s really just about paying attention and keeping things simple.
