Interest rates remain unchanged as the Federal Reserve continues to watch inflation, employment, and the broader economy.
The Federal Reserve released the minutes from its June policy meeting today, and one message came through clearly.
Fed officials continue to express concern about inflation, but they chose to leave interest rates unchanged while gathering more economic data before making their next move.
The minutes showed that policymakers are not all in complete agreement. Some believe inflation will gradually ease over time, while others believe additional interest rate increases could still become necessary if price pressures remain persistent.
For now, the Federal Reserve has decided that waiting is the best course of action.
🐾 Reporter’s Observation
The Federal Reserve isn’t ignoring inflation. It’s making a bet that today’s interest rates are already restrictive enough to bring inflation down over time without causing a much weaker job market. Whether that bet pays off remains to be seen.
As a consumer, I find myself thinking less about the next interest rate decision and more about the uncertainty surrounding it.
Should someone buy a car now or wait?
Should a business invest in new equipment today or hold off for a few more months?
Should a family buy a home, refinance a mortgage, or simply stay put?
Knowing the direction of interest rates—even if it’s not the direction we hope for—would at least make planning a little easier.
Today also happens to be my 72nd birthday.
The economic news doesn’t make me certain about much these days. Interest rates are uncertain. Inflation is uncertain. The job market is uncertain. Even world events seem uncertain.
But there is one thing I know for certain today…
I really am 72 years old.
Perhaps that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned over the years. We rarely get certainty. We make the best decisions we can with the information we have, and then we adapt as life changes.
I suspect many families, businesses, retirees, investors, and job seekers are doing exactly that today.
Willie and I appreciate every reader. Thank you for joining us as we continue making sense of today’s economy—one report at a time.
