Probiotics and Aging: A 2025 Scientific Digest

Recent 2025 research published in Aging-US established causal links between the gut microbiome and hundreds of age-related health traits. Using data from over 55,000 individuals, scientists identified 91 significant causal relationships where specific gut bacteria directly influence systemic health.

The study found that certain microbial species regulate ApoM protein levels, which are critical for heart health, while others were causally linked to risks for age-related macular degeneration. This shift from simple correlation to confirmed causality suggests that “precision probiotics” could soon be tailored to an individual’s genetic profile to delay biological aging and reduce chronic inflammation.
