Bees Coexisting Seamlessly with Pollen
Bees coexist seamlessly with pollen because they lack the mammalian adaptive immune system responsible for allergic overreactions. Humans experience allergies when specialized antibodies misidentify pollen proteins as threats, triggering histamine releases. In contrast, bees only possess an innate immune system, meaning their bodies lack the biological pathways needed to trigger an allergic reaction. Furthermore, millions of years of evolutionary adaptation have turned pollen into their primary food source. Their outer exoskeleton acts as a tough physical barrier against irritation, and worker bees mix harvested pollen with salivary enzymes to ferment it into “beebread”. This process neutralizes potential chemical irritants while making the nutrients safer to digest.
