Dimensions of Fish Gills in Relation to their Function
The size of fish gills varies significantly based on metabolic demand and habitat
The size of fish gills varies significantly based on metabolic demand and habitat. High-energy pelagic species, such as tuna, possess expansive gill surface areas to fuel their intense oxygen requirements, whereas sedentary bottom-dwellers maintain much smaller respiratory surfaces. Environmental factors also drive variation; fish in oxygen-depleted waters often develop larger gills to maximize extraction efficiency. Beyond evolutionary traits, many species exhibit remarkable phenotypic plasticity, rapidly expanding or contracting their gill surface area within days to survive fluctuating temperatures or hypoxic conditions
