Vocal Communication of Elephant Seals
Northern elephant seals are the first non-human mammals proven to use rhythm to identify individuals. During the breeding season, males produce unique, stable vocal signatures characterized by specific tempos and timbres. These “rhythmic fingerprints” allow rivals to recognize one another and remember past encounters, helping subordinate males avoid costly physical confrontations with dominant alphas. Remarkably, research shows they can distinguish subtle rhythmic differences, such as single vs. double pulses, and will only respond to calls that match the exact “beat” of a known competitor.
