A hopeful sign for prices this fall—but one month is not a trend
The Producer Price Index was unchanged in July, coming in better than expected. Wholesale goods prices fell 0.7%, helped by lower food, gasoline and transportation costs, while service prices increased 0.2%.
For small-business owners, that could mean less pressure from fuel, shipping and certain supply costs. For consumers, it improves the chances of fewer or smaller price increases at the store by October—not necessarily lower prices.
This is encouraging news. What matters now is whether July becomes August, August becomes September, and one good report becomes a recognizable trend.
